History of Indian Coins and Currency

I. Coins
It would be interesting for us to know that the first documented coinage seems to have started with 'Punch Marked' coins issued between the 7th-6th Century BC and 1st Century AD. You can classsify the coin age into the following periods:
a. Ancient
b. Medival
c. Mughal
d. Late pre-colonial
e. British India
f. Republic India
g. Others
You can see some ancient coins below, which were in circulation in our provincial states. They were issued by different states under various kings:
