IVANPAH WORLD FIRST SOLAR THERMAL POWER PLANT

Generally electricity through solar power is generated using photovoltaic cells, wherein panels are used which directly convert solar light into electricity, solar thermal uses a different method and is rarely used. In this method lakhs of mirrors are used to divert solar rays and focus them on a tower filled with water, the focused sunlight begins to heat water upto a 1000 degree Celsius, the water gets converted into steam which is used to turn turbines which eventually create electricity.
The Ivanpah project situated in the mojave desert of california went live recently and started feeding electricity into the grid. The project spans in an area of 3500 acres.  Once fully operational it will provide 392MW of electricity.
